Pillar memorial to Louis Jean Desprez – French architect responsible for many of Stockholm’s famous landmarks.
Louis Jean Desprez was born sometime during 1743 and died March 18, 1804.
He spent the last 20 years of his life doing works in Sweden after he came to the attention of King Gustavus III.
His designs were of monumental, neoclassical style influenced by this study of Greek and Roman ruins.
The memorial here is for his most ambitious project which was never fully realized, the grand Palace at Haga, which only made it as far as having the foundations constructed before the assassination of the king who had commissioned it.
Apparently, he also designed the ‘Copper Tent’ at Haga. Also, the conservatory at the Uppsala Botanical gardens is his work. Man got around.
