Västra Ryds Church

The original church of Romanesque style was built in the first half of the 1200’s. All that remains of that first portion is the eastern portion of the nave. In the 1400’s, a porch was added to the south, the nave and porch ceilings were fitted with cross vaults and the church extended to the east. At some point during the same century a sacristy was added on the northeast side of the church. The nave was enlarge and again and the new choir fitted with stellar vaults. During the Middle Ages, the church’s walls were given murals, but only fragments remain of those.
