Uppland Runestone #394

Rune Translation – ‘Torbörn erected this stone in memory of Esbjörn, his brother. They are sons of Dyrver at….’

The names Torbjörn and Esbjörn are common in runic inscriptions while Dyrver is known only on this specific stone. The inscription is probably carved by Torbjörn who also carved the stone U-379 by Maria church, the boulder U-391 at Prästgatan and a fragment of runestone in the riun of St. Olof’s church. His carvings are clumsy and lack the stylized animal ornamentation.

The oldest mention of the runestone’s place is from 1612. It was found lying as a threshold stone in the west door of St. Peter’s church and there it lay until 1941.
