St. Pers Church Ruin

The ruin of St. Pers church crowns a hill next to the vicarage just west of the old medieval center of Sigtuna. Construction of the church was completed in the early 1100’s AD. It can probably be linked to the monarchy of the time and considered as the archdiocese’s Cathedral until it was relocated to what is now Gamla Uppsala in 1190 AD.

Sigtuna’s inhabitants began construction on their cathedral around 1120 AD. Work went on for quite some time, but was never completed. Once it was allowed to fall into ruin, it was quarried for the construction of other secular buildings in the town.
