The church that stands here today is the second stone church on this site.

According to tradition, a wooden chapel existed here to be replaced by a stone church in the 1300’s. It was constructed of granite with a porch on the south side of the nave. Very likely a vestry stood on the north side.

Difficulties with cracking and maintenance led the to demolishing of the first stone church. The new was built in neoclassical style between 1836 – 1837. Sept 11, 1836 the first service was held.
