Street Toward Mariefred Church

The new Mariefred church replaced Kärnbo Church which sits as a ruin not far away. It was built in 1621 – 1624 on the ruins of a monastery belonging to the Carthusian order. It is from that monastery that Mariefred takes its name. The church was originally in stone, but it burned in the fire of 1682. Thanks to the assistance of Queen Hedvig Eleonora of Holstein-Gottorp, it was re-erected and completed in 1697.
