Trosa Lands Church

Built adjacent to the medieval town of Trosa, the oldest parts of this church date to the 1200’s. The sacristy was added sometime during the 1300’s. The 1400’s saw the ceiling converted to star vaults as well as the addition of the massive tower which could also serve as a defensive fortification. The lower part is made of granite with brick above.

Paintings in the vaults were added during the 1600’s. In 1773 the church suffered a severe fire but the vaults and most of the interior were spared damage. Afterwards, additions were made to the church. Tower was built higher and fitted with a spire. The porch was demolished with a new entrance opened in the tower’s western wall. Every window was expanded to the same size.

Within is a baptismal font of Gotland craftmanship which is contemporary to the oldest stonework in the church.
