Dingtuna Church

The original church, most likely a wooden ‘stave church’ was built on an ancient sacrificial site on a smaller moraine (debris pile left by a receding glacier). Immediately west of the church stood a citadel of stone.

In the late 1100’s or early 1200’s the stone church with cross arms was erected. Sometime during the 1200’s the church was expanded west and south.

There’s more, but I can’t puzzle out the Swedish. There were beautiful murals at one point, but they were deemed too ‘distracting’ to the parishioners so were white washed over. Something happened to bring the wall with the murals down so they’ve been forever lost except one small example which was hidden behind the pulpit.
