Svartsjö Ruin – Tower Base (I think)

This is part of the remains of the first castle at Svartsjö. It was built by King Gustav Vasa and his sons Erik XIV and Johan III in the 1500’s. Construction was finished in 1580. In 1687 the castle burned and 10 years later what remained was dismantled and moved to Stockholm where it was used in the construction of Slottet Tre Kronor (The Castle Three Crowns).

In the 1930’s the ruins were investigated and walls from different periods were revealed. Gustav Vasa had based his building project on an existing stone house in the 1520’s. The house had been extended over the years. The oldest section measured 12 x 17 meters and may have dated back to the early 14th century.
