Svinnegarn Kyrka

This church is considered one of the oldest Roman era curches with parts of the longhouse’s northern wall dating to the 1200’s. Around the 1300’s it was expanded eastward. During the middle ages, this church was a significant pilgrim church and for that reason it was widened to the south and west between 1450 and 1480 to become over twice it’s original size to the footprint it now covers today. In the early 1500’s a west tower was built, but not completed. In 1602, the church was destroyed by fire which collapsed the roof and vaults as well as destroyed murals. The vaults were not rebuilt, but replaced with a flat ceiling made of wood. Construction during the mid-1700’s increased the tower’s height and both tower and superstructure were covered with new boards.

The church was likely erected as a house church to the former king’s castle Huseby. The plastered walls are stone with brick in the tower. The entrance is through the tower.
