Vaksala Kyrka

This church was built sometime in the early to mid 1100’s before Uppsala became the seat for an Archbishop sometime around 1164. It’s construction was in the romanesque style. It has quite a few murals on the inside, some of them dating to around the early 1300’s. In the late 1700’s there was lime work done on the inside and some of the murals were lost. One of the most impressive pieces of furniture in the church is the alter, which is one of the largest in the country. From the descriptions of the other furnishings, murals and such, it sounds as if the interior is quite lavish in contrast to it’s simple outward appearance.
